Ask almost any American auto racing fan to describe the appearance and essence of the American race car and that fan will likely note the colorful paint scheme, number, aerodynamic body shape, sound and speed of a NASCAR NEXTEL Cup racer. Ask the same person to describe a midget racing car and they will have much more difficulty.
Timed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the world’s first-ever pro midget race at Hughes Stadium at Sacramento City College, the “Mighty Midgets” exhibit, sponsored by Kaeding Performance, A.R.T. Speed Equipment and the US Auto Club, will highlight the history of midget racing. It will show just how this unique form of racer can excite, thrill and compete just as well as what most people think of as a ‘race car.’ Midgets on exhibit will include a 1936 Gilmore Special “Flat Tail,” a 1937 Dreyer/V8-60, a 1940s Kurtis/Chevy II, a late 1970s Diego/Volkswagen, a 1969 Benson/Chevy II, and a 1946 Kurtis Midget Racer/V8-60. When: March 2008 – June 2008 Cost: $7 Adults; $6 Seniors; $3 Students; under 5 Free; AAA discount and group rates available Time: Museum open daily from 10am – 6pm, taking last admission at 5pm.
