Neighborhood Watch: From Start to Finish

Creating Safer Neighborhoods

WHAT IS NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH?

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH is a crime prevention program designed for Sacramento's residential community. The program is operated by neighbors and is sponsored by the Sacramento Police Department.

The object of the NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH program is to organize groups of neighbors. Through a series of informative meetings, you will learn proven steps to reduce your vulnerability to crime.

WHY NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH WORKS

Fighting crime is every citizen's responsibility. It is important for you to develop good safety habits and practice crime prevention.

By learning how criminals select targets and what tactics will discourage them, you can help reduce crime in your neighborhood.

When the community and the police work together as a team, the opportunity for crime to occur is greatly reduced.

HOW NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH CAN HELP YOU

When you start a NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH group, you will get to know your neighbors better.

In a short time, everyone will know the working habits of their neighbors -who has dogs, how many children in the family, what cars people own. You will also learn who in your neighbor- hood had valuable skills to contribute, such as Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation Training. When you know these things, it becomes easier to spot suspicious people and identify vehicles , that are not normally in the neighborhood.

If everyone participates, NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH can reduce crime and make the neighborhood a safer place to live.

STARTING A NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH GROUP

Experience has shown that a Neighborhood Watch Group, to be effective should have at least ten households involved. Talk with your neighbors and suggest becoming an effective Neighborhood Watch group. Then, call the Community Resources Section at 264-5635, weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. You will be contacted with the first available meeting date and location.
